#MondayMotivation: Protein Power

I’ll be the first to admit that I am the QUEEN of yo yo dieting and go through stretches of being a workout warrior to being a strong supporter of the Netflix and Chill movement.

Recently I have been making a lot of healthier eating and lifestyle choices.  I ran my first 5k last year and this year I have already run two!  Next up, is my very first sprint triathalon in August!

With all this training, I have been doing my best to incorporate mindful eating habits into my daily life.  It’s still summer and yes I drink alcohol and have “bad” carbs sometimes, but life is about balance.  Eating hard boiled eggs and cottage cheese gets kind of old, so for anyone else looking to stay on track that needs some power protein finds, here ya go!  Here’s some of of my favorite go-to cleaner eating super powered foodie finds!

RXBar: Protein Bar, Coffee Chocolate (Box of 12 Bars/$25.99 at RXBar.com)
Nutrition Facts: 210 calories +12 grams of protein per bar; No Added Sugar, No GMO, Dairy Free, Soy FreeGluten Free, Paleo Friendly, Vegetarian Friendly
I recently discovered this amazing CLEAN eating protein bar brand.  RXBar’s motto is NO BS, and their bars are made with all natural ingredients like nuts, dates and egg whites.  What I like is that it doesn’t make your stomach do the crazy dance from all the chemicals that are present in most protein bars.  They come in 8 different flavors including this Coffee Chocolate made with REAL coffee for that extra boost of energy in your day!

PS: Use this link and get $5 off your first purchase of RXBars!

Think Jerky: Free Range Turkey Jerky, Siracha Honey (5 Pack of Bags/$24.95 at ThinkJerky.com)
Nutrition Facts: 90 calories + 17 grams of protein per bag; Grass Fed, Gluten Free, No Added Antibiotics, No Nitrites, No added hormones, Paleo Friendly
Jerky is becoming a thing… but not all jerky is created equal.  Think Jerky is like Jerky with a conscience.  It’s also kind of a foodie thing, because all of their recipes are created by well-known chefs!  I love the Siracha Honey Turkey Jerky, because it satisfies that need for a protein rich snack that’s got some pazzazz with that siracha spice.  The other flavors like Sweet Chipotle and Orange Ginger are beef instead of turkey jerky.  And of course, the Thanksgiving flavor is a turkey jerky, because yummo!

Halo Top: Ice Cream, Birthday Cake (Pint/Prices vary, Find a store near you at HaloTop.com)
Nutrition Facts: 70 calories +6 grams of protein per 1/2 cup; 280 calories + 24 grams of protein per pint; Low Calorie, Low Sugar, High Protein
Ice cream?  Healthy?  OH yessss.  So when you get the hankering for a sweet treat think twice before you reach for the generic brands, because you can treat yo’ self the healthy way!  Some of the more popular brands of ice cream like B&J’s or HD’s* packs 250 calories in a half cup serving alone.  By the time you’ve eaten the whole pint you’ve consumed over 3/4 of what you should eat for the whole day!  YIKES!  Halo Top comes in seven fun flavors including Birthday Cake!  If you’re PMSing, stressed or you’ve just plain had it with life, you can feel slightly less guilty about indulging in a whole pint of Halo Top, because it’ll only set you back 240 to 280 calories depending on your flavor choice.  Of course, you can also use restraint and have one serving which is a great less than 100 calorie treat!

*I won’t mention any ice cream brands, because I do love them!  But today’s post is about the healthy alternatives:)

Mikey’s Muffins: English Muffins, Toasted Onion (Prices Vary, Find a store near you at www.MikeysMuffins.com)
Nutrition Facts: 103 Calories + 5 grams of protein per muffin; Paleo Friendly, Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Soy Free, Grain Free.
A few years ago a Dr. told me that I am “gluten-sensitive” so I’m not intolerant, but I know my body and when I indulge in tons of carby-gluten-filled foods it’s not good for me.  That said, I do still have gluten and carbs when I want, because life’s too short:-)  When I am seriously hankering from some toast or having a carbie barbie moment I discovered these paleo diet english muffins.  Not only are they grain free, they have way fewer calories than traditional English muffins!  There are three varieties: Original, Toasted Onion and Cinnamon Raisin.  I love using the Toasted Onion to make avocado toast with, because sometimes you just want avo toast at home and not just for the overpriced hype of being a #BasicBitch at brunch.

Thorne Research: Medipro Vegan All-In-One Shake Vanilla (44.6 oz/$69.00 at Amazon.com)
This is sooo not glamorous or cool sounding, but when it comes to protein powder it’s kind of okay to not be glammed out.  There’s so many fad diet powders and supplements out there that I trust this brand, because it’s actually been created by medical professionals. I have done my own tests and found this to have the most health benefits, protein power and yes, it even tastes great!  Mix this up with almond milk, spinach, banana and ice with a pinch of cinnamon and you’d swear you were drinkin’ a milk shake.  Okay maybe not quite, but seriously!  It’s so good and I drink it every morning during the work week.

Travel: Less than 72 Hours in NYC

I’m very lucky to have friends and family that live in the Big Apple! When I visit, it’s a whirlwind tour of everything that I need to eat and drink, all while catching up with some awesome people.

Travel - North and Red - New York - Friends

Here’s a few of the cool places I got to check out on my most recent visit over the 4th of July weekend!

But First, Coffee

Travel - North and Red - New York - Fika

Fika Coffee, Multiple Locations
I love love love coffee, and in the summer in NYC you need some good iced coffee to get your day started.  Fika has a simple coffee menu without too many fancy drinks, but definitely does regular cold and hot brews right.  Their lattes are also on point.  If you’re fueling a full day of touring I recommend their “power bars” which are really like candy bars, but hey with 16 grams of protein that’s nothing to snuff at in regards to getting your energy boost!  Totally a vay cay treat and not to be had on the reg unless you’re super active and burn calories like crazy.

Where to Roll

Travel - North and Red - New York - Burger and Lobster

Burger and Lobster, 39 W 19th Street, Flat Iron District NYC
One of the first things I need to eat when I touch down on the East Coast is a Lobster Roll.  One of my newest finds was Burger and Lobster, because it’s an AMAZING deal.  20 bucks gets you a roll, fries and salad. Just the roll alone can run you 15-30 bucks in NY or anywhere, so for this to include two sides with a hearty portion of seafood, I say “yesssss please.”

Share with Friends

Travel - North and Red - New York - Toro

Toro, 85 10th Ave, Meatpacking District NYC
This was one of the best new places I tried!  Toro is a tapas restaurant in the meat packing district that has a fantastic atmosphere, great people watching, and delicious food.  Slightly upscale, but still approachable and casual, this is a great place to go with a small to mid-sized group of friends for a great meal.   Notable dishes were the Pimientos Del Padron, Datiles Con Jamon, Jamon Serrano, Maiz Asado con Alioli y Queso Cotilja, Pulpo, and Empanada De Pollo Y Patatas.

Fancy Drinks

Bathtub Gin, 132 9th Ave, Chelsea NYC
Looking for great cocktails that no one can find?  This place is an homage to prohibition era, and is located literally behind a coffee shop storefront.  Look for a coffee shop from the street, then walk on through to find this hidden gem.  Their cocktails are mostly gin-based, but have a full menu with a variety of classic and new mixology-based cocktails to satisfy anyone’s whim.  Notable cocktails: Shirley’s Temple and Blonde Ambition.

Quintessential Brunch Goals

Travel - North and Red - New York - Penelope

Penelope Cafe, 159 Lexington Ave, Midtown East – Kips Bay NYC
No trip to NYC is complete without #brunchgoals.  Penelope has been a favorite of mine, and a mainstay for locals since 2003. This comfy spot is good for hangovers or to enjoy a great brunch bevvy.  The queue can be long especially on weekends, so feel free to put your name in and go grab a quick coffee and check out the neighborhood.  If you’re venturing on a weekday here, breakfast, and dinner offer great options.  It’s very “chick” friendly during the dinner hour, so think SATC #squadgoals. Also, I highly recommend a slice of red velvet cake no matter what time of day.   Notable brunch items: Salmon wrapped poached eggs and Nutella French Toast.

Seafood with a View

Travel - North and Red - New York - Brooklyn Crab

Brooklyn Crab, 24 Reed Street, Red Hook, Brooklyn NYC
#PatioTimes for daaaays here at BK Crab.  This place is great for everything outdoors and is apparently great in the winter too.  Grab yourself some fresh oysters, fried seafood, or a seafood pot… whatever you get it’s ALL good.  In addition to some seriously fresh seafood fare, they have entertainment and views that make you feel like you’re not even in NY.  But then you take a look around and realize, this is definitely Brooklyn with the cast of characters surrounding you.  Worth the trek from the mainland.
Pro tip: Take the FREE Ikea Boat from Pier 11.  Notable dishes: Blue Crab Roll, Seasonal Oysters, and the BK Steampot for 1.

Patio Times

Travel - North and Red - New York - Lavendar Lake

Lavender Lake, 383 Carroll Street, Gowanus, Brooklyn NYC
So, I have to admit I was super disappointed with my visit to Lavender Lake, because they offer alcoholic slushies on Fridays and Saturdays and I went on a Sunday (insert sad face emoji).  So, despite not getting the draaaaanks that I wanted, the atmosphere and patio at Lavender Lake is totally worth checking out.  Next time I will be in for some fancy drinks and food!  But for now, their atmosphere won me over.

Tiki with a Twist

Zombie Hut, 273 Smith Street, Gowanus – Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn NYC
Looking for strong frozen drink with some flare?  Zombie Hut has got an array of fruity strong cocktails to satisfy a hot summer night on the patio.  It’s also super cool and fun inside, so I am torn whether I say go for their patio or go for some inside times.  Regardless what you choose, there’s board bames, fun drinks and a great atmosphere inside and out.  Notable Drink: The Frozen Zombie.

Neighborhood Vibes

Travel - North and Red - New York - Bar Tabac

Bar Tabac, 128 Smith Street, Cobble Hill, Brooklyn NYC
If ever there were a “feeling” that you’re in Brooklyn this place is it. The candle lit, euro influenced dishes and random artisty types that hang out here make you feel right at home.  Whether you’re settling in for a chill date or throwin’ back some wine with friends this is a neighborhood joint that anyone can enjoy.  Comfort food galore and live music 4 nights a week makes me wish I lived around the corner.  Notable dishes: Burger Bar Tabac and Couscous Merguez.

Where all the Cool Kids Hang

Travel - North and Red - New York - Gansavoort

Gansavoort Park Avenue Hotel, 420 S Park Ave, Midtown East – Flat Iron District NYC
I was fancy during my visit this time and got the opportunity to stay at the Gansavoort Park Ave.  I recommend this place because it was a luxurious hotel without being stuffy.  It’s also a great neighborhood location that is convenient to getting to lots of tourist areas, without being in tourist central.  The bi-level rooftop during the day was a fantastic place to sun bathe, hit the pool and grab a delish snack like their guac with plantain chips.  Even if you’re not staying at the hotel, hitting their rooftop bar, The Drift for some cocktails and views is definitely a great idea if you’re in the area.  If you’re up for some cluuuub times see about hitting the VIP Red Room for some DJ, dancing and a scene.

And Hey, it’s Okay to Be a Tourist

Travel - North and Red - New York - Eataly

Eataly, 200 5th Ave,Flat Iron District NYC
I love going to off the beaten path places, but it’s a-okay to enjoy places that are touristy central, including Eataly.  Eataly is a unique market place chef-driven and totally amazing, so don’t beat yourself up if you just can’t help indulging in their artisanal market shopping, delightful desserts or going carbie barbie and sitting down to a hearty pasta or pizza dish.  No judgments over here, because Eataly is the best!

Always looking forward to more NYC finds next time I visit!  Comment below with your favorite places to eat, drink and parte!  Would love to check them out soon!

Summer Beauty Update

I can’t believe it’s already the end of June!  I have been so busy playing outside and having fun that I haven’t had much time for blogging.  Of course, I had to make time to share all my fave summer beauty supplies!

Summer Nails!

My Pedi Set, Let’s Go Spring! Guide has some great tips for getting your legs and feet ready for sundress season that are absolutely great for summer too!  To update your paws, here’s some fun hues!

Essie: Nail Polish in California Coral (.46 fl. oz/$8.50 at Essie.com)
I’m obsessed with coral pinks, and Essie’s California Coral is even brighter once it’s on your nails.  It really pops and gives you a funky look without being too over the top and in yo’ face pink!  But, be sure to check out the coral that works for you, are you a neutral or bold coral kind of gal?

China Glaze: Lite Brites Nail Lacquer with Hardener in I’ll Pink to That! (.5 fl. oz./$7.50 at Ulta.com)
Speaking of in yo’ face, this is the ultimate PINK! This color is perfectly rebellious and girly.  Looks even better holding a cocktail in your social media #draaaaanks posts, so I’ll pink to that!

OPI: Alice Through the Looking Glass Nail Lacquer Collection in What’s the Hatter with You (.5 fl. oz/$10 at Ulta.com)
Johnny Depp’s movie may not be a hit, but this amazing color from the Alice Through the Looking Glass OPI Collection is definitely a win in my opinion.  Perfect for an edgier festival look.

Revlon: Colorstay Gel Envy in Full House (.4 fl. oz./$7.99 at Ulta.com)
Revlon has an awesome new formula to help your manicure last.  This Full House color is a cool poolside look even if you’re not in Vegas!

Zoya: Studio Nail Lacquer in Moonday (.5 fl. oz./$10 at www.Zoya.com)
Neutral doesn’t have to be boring!  Zoya is chaneling your inner Star Wars nerd in a classy way with this Leia that will definitely capture the eyes of your Hans Solo. Bonus: Zoya is all natural and vegan so you’re treatin’ the environment right:)

Tame Those Tresses!

I have long hair and it’s a crap shoot how my hair will act on any given day.  From the weather being humid and frizzing my hair out to my locks getting dried out from swimming in the pool without a bathing cap, summer is a stressful time for my mane. Here’s a few products I have discovered that help you treat your summer hair needs.

Herbal Essences: Naked Dry Shampoo (4.9 fl. oz./$4.99 at Target.com)
THIS. IS. EVERYTHING.  I don’t know about you, but once I discovered dry shampoo existed it was a game changer for me.  I don’t like to wash my hair everyday because of it’s drying effects, the management of having to dry my hair etc.  Enter, this delightful dry shampoo for times when I’m lazy and don’t want to wash my hair, don’t have time or whatever the excuse is.  It’s also summer so sometimes my hair just gets oily and dirty from being outside, but then my ends are dry AF.  The price for this is awesome, especially with how much I use it (no judgements). Dry shampoo can run you upwards of $20-25 a bottle for one that works well.  I have tried numerous, and this is the best bargain for the product.  It smells great, gets rid of the greasiness, without over drying your hair which is an issue I have run into with many of the inexpensive brands. Again, this is literally everything and I don’t know how I ever survived college without dry shampoo.

Dove: Style + Care Flexible Hold Hairspray (7 fl. oz./$6.65 at Amazon.com)
Weather is not your friend in the summer from humidity to wind it’s all over the place. This light hold spray keeps my top knot in place and my beach waves wavey, and that’s if that is what I want my hair to be doing.  Bonus, this smells great!

Redken: All Soft Conditioner (8.5 fl. oz./$16.50 at Ulta.com)
I love Redken products for hair, especially their all soft line.  This is the perfect way to keep your locks moisturized in the summer without stripping or over saturating.  Touchable, soft and smooth is the end result when using any of the All Soft shampoo, conditioner, or leave-in products.

Glam Bod!

Don’t forget t protect your beautiful bod with the right SPF, but of course you have to look your best so here’s a few makeup and body buys that’ll keep your skin and look fresh this summer.

Coppertone: Sport Continuous Sunscreen Spray (8 fl. oz/$7.99 at Target.com)
This goes without saying, but sunscreen is an absolute must in your pool bag this summer!  I of course, will look like a tomato if I don’t lather up, but regardless I have one word for you, Cancer.  So here’s the thing, it couldn’t be easier these days to apply sunscreen so there’s really no excuse. The Coppertone brand when I was a kid would gross me out with all of it’s thick gloppy-ness that would make a mess all over the back seat of my mom’s mini van.  But these days, they have upped their game with this super sleek spray.  Best thing: If you’re by yourself it’s easy to reach over and spray your back evenly.  No splotches, no awkward convos with your 2nd cousin removed at the family reunion with a “Can you get my back?” Let’s not make this weird request.

Laura Mercier: Tinted Moisturizer, SPF 20 – Oil Free (1.7 oz/$44 at Sephora.com)
If you’ve read any of my previous beauty updates, you know I love love love Laura Mercier makeup.  One of my faves is the tinted moisturizer and in the summer, I switch to the oil free version.  This is a great lightweight moisturizer and makeup solution in the summer.  The tint gives your skin the glow you want, the SPF protection protects your face, and the oil free formula ensures that you won’t clog your pores.  I love using this in lieu of heavy foundation in the summer.

Fresh: Sugar, Sport Treatment Sunscreen SPF 30 (.2 oz/$25 at Sephora.com)
You can tell I’m serious about protecting my skin, so it’s no different when it comes to my lips.  Winter automatically dries our lips so we resume maintenance of them then, but it’s super important to protect them year round!  I love the Fresh Brand’s Sugar lip glosses, so I was stoked when they released a summer sport formula!  With SPF 30, a delightful smooth glide on formula that leaves your lips soft and moisturized is perfectly natural way to accent your beach smile:)

Bare Minerals: Radiance powder (.03 oz./$21 at Sephora.com)
This whole contouring movement has got me like ???  I stick to what I know and Bare Minerals  makes it easy to fake it till you make it with a bronzer, blush and highlighters in various translucent shimmer shades and bolder bronzers and blushes that blend easily.  I love using them together, separate or even to add a little warm all over to my face.

Benefit: They’re Real in Beyond Blue (.3 oz/$24 at Sephora.com)
Summer is about having fun!  I love this funky take on mascara from Benefit, and it’s actually not that crazy lookin’ on either. I’m fairly conservative with my makeup, but it was suggested to me at the Benefit Counter when I was getting my eyebrows done that I put some of this bad boy color on the lower lashes to add some dimension and I loved it!  So if you’re not ready for a full on plunge to colored mascara, try it on your lower lashes, while using a regular black on the top.  It literally blows my mind how subtle but cool it is.  Try it!

Do you have any great makeup tips or fave products for summer?  Hit me up at NorthandRed@gmail.com, on social media or by commenting!

Pedi, Set, Let’s Go Spring!

Happy Spring!  Here in Chicago, it’s still hit or miss with a knock on wood that it could absolutely start snowing anytime through April, but I’m hopeful that spring is hear to stay, so why not get ready to enjoy it!

It’s an exciting time to be able to dig into the bottom of my shoe bin to pull out my beloved sandals!  But, my FEET!  EEK!?  They are NOT ready for this sort of exposure. In fact, neither are my legs!  Here’s my Pedi, Set, Go Guide to getting your unexposed winter parts ready for the sun!

It’s Time to Shave… Like for Reals!

You know who you are… either you’re single or your BF doesn’t mind roaming the wild jungle that has sprouted on your legs.  It’s okay though, because there’s an easier, gentler way to shave.

Schick: Intuition Razor (Prices range from $9-$12 at your local drug store)
I love love love Intuition Razors, because even though it’s more of an investment than cheap razors, the built in skin conditioning solid helps to remove unwanted hair without dulling your skin.  Not only is it smooth sailing with less cuts when you glide over difficult areas like your knees, but this is easy and safe to use on your under arms too!

Get your glow on!

If you haven’t taken a look at my profile or social media, then you may not know that I am very pale Irish lookin’ lady.  Soooo I am like a ghost now since my skin hasn’t seen the sun in quite a while.  #ChicagoWinter #Chiberia

Jergens: Natural Glow Daily Moisturizer (7.5 fl. oz/$7.64 at Drugstore.com)
There’s a lot of self tanners out there, and some a great and some are absolutely scary.  Over the years I have experimented with these brands and I always come back to Jergens.  Their Natural Glow line is a gradual way to get your glow.  Every day that I apply it’s a little bit darker and if I feel like I’m getting too unnatural I just skip a day.  They have Fair to Medium and Medium to Dark available for developing your glow.  I also love that there Natural Glow Line now offers firming and SPF versions.  The SPF version is perfect for me, because I get to look like I have had a little bit of beach time without the skin cancer risk.  #Winning  I especially love this for my legs, because even when I do get sun, my darn legs either get red streaks and are totally uneven or they just remain pale and pasty.  This is the perfect applicator after you shave to have a smooth, sun-kissed legs ready for sundress weather:)

Exfoliate Away Dead Winter Skin!

Winter is rough on the skin, so even if you keep up with your moisturizing routine, it’s always a good habit to exfoliate to maximize the benefits for your bod.

Sabon: Foot Scrub (5.1 fl. oz./$22 at Sabon.com)
I love, love, love Sabon products because of their mission to create luxury bath and body products with natural ingredients.  It says foot scrub, but this rich formula is great for exfoliating your legs and feet with a bit of menthol to refresh and hydrate your limbs.  I love to use this after shaving and before applying lotion or sunless tanner.  Your legs will look younger, healthier and smoother from any shave bumps that occur.  This is also totally great for guys too:)  Everyone wears sandals and flip flops, so you if your feet need a pick me up this is a great way to treat yo’ feet;)

Treat Yo’ Feet!

Once you’ve exfoliated your feet, now it’s time to treat them right!  Feet deserve something different than your regular moisturizer for your legs and body.  We put them through so much stress and they are more prone to get dried out that you need something stronger.

Neutrogena: Foot Cream (2 fl. oz./$4.69 at Neutrogena.com)
There’s no better deal than this!  It’s less than $5 bucks for super rich, nourishing lotion to treat those toes and cracking heals!  I have said this about their hand lotion too, but the Norwegian Formula is totally the secret sauce to making this a great product.  I also love that there’s no scent, because there’s no need to make our feet smell like a bouquet of flowers.  This lotion eaves your skin feeling soft and replenished.

Get Ready for your Pedi!

What’s the best part about showing off all this prep work you’ve done for your legs and feet!?  The beautiful rainbow of colors that you can paint your toes!  But first, Let’s get a base coat on there:)

OPI: Natural Base Coat (.5 fl. oz/$10 at HSN.com)
The best way to protect your nails is to start with a base coat like OPI’s Natural Base Coat.  Their formula helps your pedi last longer and prevents staining of the nail bed.

Pick a Color!

Spring 2016 has so many fancy options, but I’ll share a few that will definitely be on my radar:)

Butter London: Nail Laquer in Nude Stilletos (.4 fl. oz/$15 at ButterLondon.com)
Perfect for springtime, this sheer pink shade will give you some color and class.

NARS: Nail Polish in Jungle Red (.5 fl. oz./$20 at NARSCosmetics.com)
Red is always classy, and I love this slightly berry hue by NARS.  Like an LBD this goes great with everything!

Orange (Coral)

Essie: Nail Polish in Chubby Cheeks (.46 fl. oz/$8.50 at Essie.com)
This is my personal fave!  I Love corals that are not too orange-y. I’m crazy about this bright and fun color that will go with my spring wardrobe!

Yellow (Gold)

Chanel: Le Vernis Longwear Nail Colour in 518 CHAÎNE OR (.4 fl. oz./$28 at Chanel.com)
Bright and light, without being in your face:)  This is the perfect yellow with a bit of gold in it, so you can get funky without letting your neon 80s-freak flag fly.

Yves Saint Laurent: La Laque Couture Spring Collection in Peace Green (.34 fl. oz/$28 at YSLBeautyUS.com)
Such a cool limited edition shade from YSL for Spring!  Peace Green has some purple-y hints that creates a beautiful iridescent look.  If a nail shade had feelings this would truly be peaceful and serene.

OPI: Hello Kitty Nail Lacquer Collection in My Pal Joey (.5 fl. oz/$10 at Ulta.com)
When I was a kid my sisters and I had this how-to manicure book with all sorts of wild colors.  We’d try to make flowers and stars with special tiny brushes to have outrageous summer nails.  This is the perfect bright funky blue to give you an adult, but polished pop of color.

Sally Hansen: Complete Salon Manicure in Plum’s the World (.5 fl. oz./$7.99 at Ulta.com)
This Plum wonder is a great neutral, and an awesome way to transition from Winter to Spring!

Julep: Glitter Nail Color in Yumi (.27 fl. oz./$14 at Nordstom.com)
This Julep Glitter Nail in Yumi is a great weekend or bachelorette party fun color!

Finishing Touch… Promise!

After all this shaving, exfoliating, moisturizing and getting our legs and feet all prepped for Spring Sandal season, you best make sure that your toes are protected!

Top Coat

Essie: Gel Setter Top Coat (.46 fl. oz./$10 at Essie.com)
My mom is a traditional lady who gets a mani every week and pedi every 4 weeks.  She takes her nails very seriously and she always uses this top coat.  It absolutely makes your mani/pedi last longer and is worth the investment!

Do you have any great mani/pedi tips and tricks?  Have a great nail color that you’re obsessed with?! Hit me up at NorthandRed@gmail.com, on social media or by commenting!

Pocket: Save Stuff For Later

We’re all overwhelmed by how much information we’re absorbing.  Sometimes I’ll see a post through social media or someone will send me a link, but I know I don’t have the attention span or time to read the full article.  That’s where Pocket comes in.

photo cred: link

Save to pocket works a few ways.

  1. You can use the plug-in on your browser (similar to Pinterest) to save links or articles to read later.
  2. You can copy and paste the link into an email and send it to add@savetopocket.com and it automatically saves the article in your account.
  3. If you’re on twitter there’s a pocket button to easily save articles that sound interesting when you’re scrolling your feed.Save to Pocket - North and Red
  4. On iphone, if you have the app downloaded, you can add links via the share tab in your web browser or other social platforms like Linkedin.  (Sorry non-iphone users, I don’t know if it works there too or not, but I’m assuming it does!)

I used to copy and paste links and email them to myself if I wanted to ready it later or reference it.  But with Pocket I can be a hoarder of links just like I am with shoes, because you never know when you’ll go back to them:)

~M~ Tip: I LOVE being able to organize the links with adding a category too!  (ie: Digital Marketing, Blogging, Health and Wellness, etc.)

REVISED 5.15.2016

Winter Beauty Update: Part 4, Treat Yo’ Self

Spring is less than a month away and we’re in the home stretch for winter to end.  The last installment of my Winter Beauty Update, is to treat yo’self!  In this post I’m sharing my favorite makeup products to perk up your look as the sun emerges and the weather warms up!

Treat Yo’ Self

Tinter Moisturizer

Laura Mercier: Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20 (1.7 fl. oz./$44 at LauraMercier.com)
This fantastic little makeup + moisturizer combo is fantastic to put over your regular moisturizer, or if you’re totally feelin’ like you’re skin is good to go, you can use it solo as a facial moisturizer.  The added bonus is that there’s a tint to give you an all over facial glow!  There are 44 shades to choose from so it’s easy to find one that will go with your skin tone. I’m so pale that I am “porcelain” aka the lightest one that they have!  But, my skin looks brighter and I look awake (and not sickly) with the addition of a little color.  It’s great for me because sometimes I am super low maintenance with my make up routine and I will just use this in lieu foundation.  It’s a great light weight formula to allow your skin to breath, but still get that all over coverage.

Face Powder

Bare Minerals: Original Foundation Broad Spectrum SPF 15 (.28 oz./$28.50 at www.bareescentuals.com)
This illuminating, light weight powder, has been in my makeup bag for over 10 years.  I have yet to find another powder that compliments my skin without covering me up.  I have very pale, freckled skin, so I want to even out my skin without glob-ing it on. Not only does it give me a flawless look, but the mineral formula is proven and I can attest to improving your skin without drying it out.

Benefit: Fake Up Hydrating Crease Control Concealer (.12 oz/$24 at Benefitcosmetics.com)
Concealer is a double edged sword, because usually you’re trying to conceal something you don’t want to see.  But, a lot of concealers are heavy and can flake or dry your skin.  Fake Up is intended as an under eye concealer, but I use it all lover my face:) Instead of dabbing a glob of tan liquid onto a red spot or under my eyes, this easily glides over what you’re concealing and the clear part around the color is a moisturizer, so as you blend it in, it’s actually adding hydration and not completely drying out your skin. This is the best to throw in your purse and be able to touch up in the afternoon if you’re starting to show some tired eye bags, or just touch up around your face to give you a little recharge.  It is literally a #magicstick of makeup.

Lip Gloss

Fresh SUGAR Tinted Lip Treatment Sunscreen SPF 15 (.15 oz/$24 at Sephora.com)
Part gloss, part lip stick, it’s called a “lip treatment”…I’m not really sure how to categorize it.  However, I love this stuff!  Lip glosses can sometimes be sticky, drying and not exactly well that glossy.  SUGAR is perfect to get that glossy smooth finish, while reaping the benefits of SPF and moisturizers.  I love the selection of colors there are and if you want you can go from coral to pink to no color at all.  You can also play around with how much you apply.  ie: Pictured above is the Ruby Red Color, but it doesn’t necessary look that dark unless you layer it on to be darker.  So if you’re a bit afraid of red lipstick, this is the perfect way to try it out!

Lip Pencil

Nars: Satin Lip Pencil (.07 oz/$25 at Nars.com)
For those that are less of the faint of heart when it comes to applying rouge to your lips, this is the product for you.  Bold, matte and lasting color.  They have 18 shades from nudes to bold reds, pinks and corals to transition with your dark winter wardrobe to your bright and beautiful spring classics.  I really love this for a going out look, because I’m not an everyday bold lip kind of girl.  But when I do, DAMN this stuff makes my lips go Heyyyyy without talking… which is saying something, because I am usually heard before seen at a party;)

Eye Shadow

Urban Decay: Naked Eye Shadow Palette ($29/$54 at UrbanDecay.com)
I don’t think I own one single color eye shadow. I love to work with a palette for a few reasons.  One, you’re going to have a better look if you layer and use contour shading to make your eyes pop.  And two, you’re definitely getting more bang for you buck when you have a selection of colors vs buying each individually.  That said, if you’re new to palettes or you’re looking for a good one the Urban Decay Naked 2 Basics Palette.  This neutrals based palette gives you everything you need to go from day to night. If you want to get fancy and more bold check out some of the others they offer.

Cream Eye Shadow

Laura Mercier: Caviar Stick Eye Colour (.05 oz/$28 at Sephora.com)
This creamy eye color in a stick is the perfect base, blender, or smokey eye creator!   I love using Rose Gold as a base because it’s matte, but shimmery.  Other colors like Khaki or Plum are great for creating a smokey eye or smooth contrast.  I absolutely love the precision you have because it’s a stick so you have complete control when creating your unique eye look.

Eye Liner

Stila: Smudge Stick Waterproof Eye Liner (.01 oz./$22 at Stila.com)
I am not a steady hand kind of girl, so this smudge stick allows me fool proof lines for my eyes.  With 19 colors to choose from you can have a subtle funky eye with Shimmering Egg Plant, or you can be bold and even create an easy cat eye look with Jet Black. The best part, it’s waterproof, so it won’t budge and you look will last.

Maybelline: Lash Stiletto, Waterproof Ultimate Length Mascara (.05 fl. oz./$7.82 at Drugstore.com)
The eyes are the window to the soul, and not everyone can afford extensions to help you win Bachelor Ben’s heart.  One of the cheapest buys in my makeup tool box is also one of the best!  Lash Stilletto extends, separates and perks up my lashes for any look, day or night.

Nars: Dual Intensity Blush (.21 oz/$45 at Nars.com)
Looking to perk up those cheeks for your instagram sefies, this dual intensity blush is the perfect combination to give you a subtle glow and amp up your look.  I love the various combos that Nars offers to create contour and definition for your cheeks.

Winter Beauty Update: Part 3, Treat Yo’ Hair

The last few weeks I have shared tips for your face and body, but hair care is totally important this time of year.  Condition, Condition, Condition is really what we have to do to keep our locks healthy during these dry times. Here’s some of my favorite hair products to make those tresses shine like the rockstar you are!

Treat Yo’ Hair

Volumizing Shampoo

Pantene: Sheer Volume Shampoo (12 fl. oz./$3.99 at Pantene.com)
With an ad slogan like “hair so healthy it shines” Pantene is a product that continues to service all my hair care needs with prices that won’t break the bank.  I absolutely love their volumizing products especially their shampoo. It gives you that weightless, full-bodied bounce to your hair with out drying it out.  In winter I am trying to keep the moisture in without drying it out.  Their shampoo is the perfect way for my hair to gain a healthy residue free lift that lasts all day.

Color Care Shampoo

Redken: Color Extend Magnetics Sulfate-Free Shampoo (10.1 fl. oz./$15.50 at Ulta.com)
When it comes to colored hair, I speak from experience that sometimes regular shampoo can wash out color faster than you would like.  Regardless of the brand, you want to make sure you look for a sulfate-free formula when you have colored hair.  It’s absolutely key to maintaining your color for a lot longer.  I recently fell in love with Redken’s Color Extend Magnetics products, not just because of the pink bottle, but because it actually works! It gently lifts dirt and oil, strengthens your hair and fortifies your colored hair to look healthier and helps your color last longer.

Garnier Fructis: Sleek & Shine Conditioner (13 fl. oz./$3.39 at Drugstore.com)
I’m not a loyalist to hair products, I actually believe that you should swith shampoos and conditioners periodically, because our hair texture changes, the weather changes, it’s always an uphill battle of change really.  However, I find that I always go back to Garnier’s sleek and shine products, especially their conditioner.  Not only does this product not break the bank and you can find it at your local drug store, it’s incredibly nourishing and helps strengthen my hair.  I try to make haircuts last longer than I should, you’re supposed to go ever 6 weeks when I go sometimes every 6 months!  So, this product is great at conditioning my ends to keep them healthier longer, so I can save that $ for my expensive salon habit when I do go:)

Hair Mask

It’s a Ten: Miracle Hair Mask (8 fl. oz./$30 at Ulta.com)
I know, a mask for your hair?  Like the same you do as for your face?!  And, my answer is absof***inglutely.  This seems like a lot of money to spend on something for your hair, but it’s not something you use everyday necessarily.  If you’re like me, most of the time shower time is like a get in get out let’s get on to the business of my day type of routine.  So, what’s great is while you’re doin’ your shaving and other things in the shower, just apply this all over your hair and let it sit for 4-5 minutes and it’s still going to leave you with super healthy, softer hair.  If you’ve got time, shampoo and apply this, then step out of the shower, wrap your head in a towel do some chores etc for about 15 minutes and your hair will be like WHAAAAT this is like a spa day!  Seriously, I can’t stress enough how much the 10 points that It’s a Ten promotes are actually true of all their products.  I just can’t afford all of them at once, so this is a good quick fix investment of their line;)

Leave In Conditioner

Redken: All Soft Heavy Cream (8.5 fl. oz/$17.50 at Ulta.com)
Redken, is one of those salon brands that I have grown to love and trust over the years.  Their prices are not always that over the top either for the quality of what you’re getting.  After you’ve showed and your hair is ready to go under the heat, I LOVE using this cream on the ends of my hair, because it really does feel soft!  This is great as a stand alone if you decided not to condition, or to give your hair an extra boost of moisture before drying it out with the heat from hair dyers and irons.  I prefer applying this product just to the ends of my hair, but if you’re feelin’ like you need that extra moisture go for it all over;)  Their All soft line is great, and really makes you feel like you have that touchable hair that movie stars have.

Leave in Conditioning Spray

It’s A Ten: Miracle Leave-in Product (4 fl. oz./$18 at Ulta.com)
Another it’s a Ten, Meghan!?  Yes, seriously, I know this stuff is expensive, but their Leave-in product is actually more affordable and more for the gal and go.  So, on days when I don’t have time to hair mask or feel like I just need a little extra conditioning after I towel dry my hair, I spritz this all over and it’s like a quick cocktail fix for my hair!  I love traveling with this, because it’s a great go to if their’s unpredictable hard water where you’re staying or even in dry or humid climates, this helps keep you hair in check from all the natural forces that fight out hair to look good;)  Try a travel sized one the next time you travel here.

Hair Spray

L’Oreal Paris:  Elnett Satin Hairspray, Extra Strong Hold, Unscented (11 fl. oz/$14.99 at L’OrealParisUSA.com)
I have a history of doing some FUNKY things to my hair, what can I say, it was the 90s/early 2000s.  So, when it comes to dramatic hair, this stuff actually holds your ‘do.  Not only does this stuff hold up ‘dos form the late 90s, but it’s also completely brushable.  I love to spritz this on my brush and comb through my hair after blow drying.  It keeps my hair in place, with out being plastered straight.

Dry Shampoo

drybar: Detox Dry Shampoo (3.5 fl. oz./$23 at thedrybar.com)
LIFE. SAVER.  So, I don’t wash my hair everyday… I know?! I live on the edge that way.  But, with Detox by drybar, it’s the perfect way for me to keep my look for another day without having to wash my hair.  Uplifts my tresses to look fresh, clean and like I did wash my hair that day:)

Did you miss Part One or Two of my Winter Beauty Update?!  Check them out: Part One | Part Two.

Winter Beauty Update: Part 2, Treat Yo’ Body

In Part One, of my Winter Beauty Update, I shared all my best tips for taking care of your face.  If I only did my beauty regiment with my face, by the time I’m 75 I’ll be gorgeous from the neck up, but what about the rest of my body?  Here’s Part deux, the Treat Yo’ Body portion of this series to help you stay hydrated and beautiful for when that exposed skin emerges again this spring:)

Treat Yo’ Body

Cetaphil: Gentle Skin Cleanser (16 fl. oz./$11.99 at Walgreens.com) I mentioned earlier that Cetaphil’s ingredients were similar to the facial cleanser I use.  So, for your face, you need an extra boost of anti-aging and all the good stuff.  But, when it comes to all over your body, sometimes keepin’ it simple and on the cheap is the best thing for you.  Cetaphil is great for your face, and but it’s actually amazing for your body too.  I use this in the shower vs a bar of soap or those bath gels that have chemicals and dies in them, because it keeps you from drying out, and does a good job of getting you clean.  I also really love that it’s something that dermatologists recommend to wash my face with.  My chest and back can sometimes have dirt and oil break outs from sweat or my long hair, so it’s a great way to mildly cleanse areas that are prone to break outs that aren’t your face.  I know it’s gross to talk about, but hey it happens to everyone, so this is a great fix!

Sabon: Body Scrub (21.2 fl. oz/$35 at Sabon.com) I fell in LOVE with this stuff last year when I was at an event at Block 37.  This natural sea salt remedy is a like a kick start for your bod.  If you’re not used to exfoliating be gentle, because the salt crystals are larger than a traditional exfoliant.  I especially love scrubbing down my legs with this before or after shaving. Your legs will feel so incredibly smooth because this gets rid of that dead skin and makes it a gentler shave and/or smooths down the areas you did shave.  I am torn which I like better, before or after!? It’s also great for your limbs that can get cracked and dry in the winter.  Once you rub this stuff all over and walk out of the shower, you’ll thank me for how little moisturizer or if any that you have to use.  I especially love the kiwi mango scent, because it reminds me of summer;)

Moisturizer (Full Body)

Nivea: Skin Firming Hydration Body Lotion (13.5 fl. oz./$7.10 at Amazon.com)
I have been using this lotion for over 15 years.  At this point, I should be a spokesperson for them, because I don’t know that I have ever been this loyal to any product.  This is a non-greasy incredibly moisturizing formula that’s great for all over your bod.  I love the smoothing qualities it has to keep my skin’s elasticity without making me feel like I’m lotion-y sweaty mess throughout the day.

Moisturizer (Hands)

Neutrogena: Hand Cream (3 fl. oz./$5.69 at Neutrogena.com)
For the price, this stuff is legit!  You can buy expensive hand creams from department stores, but this stuff is the real deal.  The Norwegian Formula is the secret sauce, and I recommend the original formula or the fast absorbing as well.  I’m a gal on the go, and I really love the quick dry, soak in my skin fast feel of the fast absorbing formula, but the original is the OG moisturizer for some serious hand therapy. It’s also great for my nails and cuticles which is a bonus, for me since I’m horrible about manicure maintenance. This is perfect for when you’re about to brave the cold weather, or even before bed. Whenever you’re feelin’ it, this little lotion will fit right into your purse.

Moisturizer (Feet)

Sabon: Foot Cream (5.27 fl. oz./$19 at Sabon.com)
You better believe I take care of my most precious little toesies!  This magical cream is the perfect lightweight formula to battle those dry cracks on your tired feet.  This perfect cream is like a ritual for me before bed.  It’s so relaxing for your feet to take a break from all the hard work and pressure we put on them.  There’s a slight minty-ness to the lotion that really helps to cool and relax your exhausted feet.  If you want to get real, I love massaging my feet up to my ankles with this stuff then putting some socks on so it really soaks it all up.  Even your feet need a little treat ‘yo self-ness, so in the AM they are soft and ready to take you where you need to go:)

Winter Beauty Update: Part 1, Treat Yo’ Face

It’s February and my skin has been all over the map lately.  I’m the first one to admit that I love a good spa day, but let’s face it no one always has the time or money for pedicures and facials everyday.  So here’s part one of some of my favorite stuff to keep your beauty routine fresh this February.

Treat Yo’ Face

AVEDA: All-Sensitive Cleanser (5 fl. oz/$23 at Aveda.com)
I recently discovered this and I am so happy I did!  This winter, I found that my skin was drying out using a foaming cleanser, but sometimes when I wear makeup it’s hard to get my skin clean.  This cleanser is similar to using Cetaphil which is recommended by Dermatologists, but has more makeup removing, long term skin benefits.  It’s the perfect cleanser for dryer weather, and my skin has seen much improvement over the past few weeks since I tried it!

Clinique: 7 Day Scrub Cream, Rinse Off Formula (3.4 fl. oz./$21 at Clinique.com)
I have used Clinique products since l was a teenager, and their skin care line is fantastic.  I often go back to using many of their products, but the one that always stays on my shelf in the bathroom is the 7 Day Scrub Cream.  This is an intense exfoliator, so it’s not mean to be used everyday.  It’s perfect for a date night, or special day when you want your skin to glow a little extra.  After your regular cleanse, apply this and gently massage over your skin avoiding the eye area and voila.  You’ll feel the scrub getting deep down, and the moisturizing formula will allow for it to get rid of all that dead skin, leaving you refreshed.

: Multi-Active Toner (8.4 fl. oz/$36 at Dermalogica.com)
With Dermalogica products, you can’t go wrong.  I feel it necessary to state for the record that I use this toner year round.  I use it after I wash my face in the morning and at night, because it helps prep your skin to absorb your moisturizer.  Just cover your eyes and spritz your face and it’s a great pallet cleanser after washing your face for the next steps of your routine.  And, if you are putting makeup on for the evening, it’s a great boost to just do a little spritz before applying.

Moisturizer (Day)

Dermalogica: Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF 50 (1.7 fl. oz./$66 at Dermalogica.com)
This is probably the most expensive thing you can invest in, but I believe when it comes to your face, you need to protect what you have, especially when you’re as pale as I am.  Dermalogica’s Dynamic Skin Recovery is not only great for it’s SPF benefits, but it’s also firming up your skin through out the day.  Most people think age smart products are for night time, but I say why not in the day time?  That’s when you’re most exposed to those free radicals, dirt, sunlight and all the crazy things that your skin is exposed to.  I fight back with this super smooth, lightweight formula that leaves my skin feeling moist and protected all day.

Moisturizer (Night)

Philosophy: Renewed Hope in a Jar (2 fl. oz./$52 at Philosophy.com)
The most important time to moisturize and renew your skin is at night.  Philosophy’s newest rendition of Hope in a Jar is specifically geared for that!  Just like you charge your iphone, you need to recharge your skin, so this formula is great, because it’s almost like a light weight mask that you put on and wake up refreshed!  Pores minimized, check! skin glowing, check!

Spot Treatment

The Body Shop: Tea Tree Oil (.67 fl. oz/$18 at TheBodyShop.com)
The best way to fight break outs is the natural way.  Tea Tree Oil is the best way to keep your skin looking clear with out any harsh chemicals or additives, because it’s completely natural.  Apply to blemished areas or potential areas to soak up all the bad stuff, and treat your skin purely.

Lip Exfoliant

Fresh: Sugar Lip Polish (.6 oz/$24 at Fresh.com)
Whether you go with a gloss or a lipstick, I highly recommend treating your lips as you do the rest of your face.  This exfoliating lip scrub is perfect to use a few times a week to get rid of cracks and dryness that occurs especially during winter.  The all natural ingredients like brown sugar and shea butter are safe for accidentally licking your lips.  Other exfoliators are meant for your skin, but this is gentle enough to improve the texture of your lips, leaving them softer and more hydrated.

Burt’s Bees: Ultra Conditioning Lip Balm (.15 oz/$4 at BurtsBees.com)
Whether it’s day or night, this is my go to for a quick moisturizing boost to my lips.  This non-addictive, no color, no frills chap stick gets me through winter and keeps my lips from aging year round.  With ingredients like shea and cocoa butters, why wouldn’t I want to treat my lips the same way I do my body or hair?  This is my go to for any no makeup day, or just cause:)
